"Snow White" real-life film adaptation: Disney expects a huge loss in the millions

USA - Disney made film history with "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937). Expectations for the live-action adaptation were correspondingly high - but the controversial production turned out to be a financial disaster.

Snow White" was released in German cinemas on March 20. It became clear within the first few days that the 250 million euro film project would not recoup its costs.

As Deadline reports, the Disney production "will record an estimated loss of 115 million US dollars after deducting all ancillary costs for home entertainment, television and Disney+", according to distribution sources.

Overall, Disney is expecting a worldwide box office result of 225 million dollars for "Snow White".

Since the start of production, "Snow White " has been accompanied by bad press and critical fans.

Disney cast 23-year-old Rachel Zegler, half of whom is of Colombian descent, in the title role. This led to massive headwinds, as Snow White's skin is actually supposed to be "as white as snow" according to the fairytale.

The role of the seven dwarves was also the subject of criticism. The dwarf star of Game of Thrones, Peter Dinklage (55), expressed his incomprehension in a podcast back in 2022 about Disney's decision to remake a "damn backward-looking story about seven dwarves living together in a cave".

Disney then claimed to be in contact with representatives of the dwarf community in order to avoid reproducing inappropriate stereotypes.

Later, the decision was nevertheless made to use computer-animated dwarves - now the accusation was that a marginalized group of actors had been denied the chance to play seven prominent roles in an international film blockbuster .

However, the public statements made by Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot (39) also overshadowed the filming. Zegler called for the liberation of Palestine on her social channels, while Gadot served in the Israeli military and condemnedHamas' attack on Israel .
