Typical symptoms are headaches, nausea or joint and muscle pain. In severe cases, it can also lead to internal bleeding and even death.

After two schoolchildren in the neighborhood of the local mayor Carlito Cernal died from the disease, he had a bizarre idea on how to stop the spread of the disease.

Last Tuesday, a month-long program was launched in which there is to be a bounty on mosquitoes or mosquito larvae - whether dead or alive.

According to the BBC, 700 mosquitoes or mosquito larvae have already been handed in. 21 people have already claimed a reward.

For every five animalshanded in , residents receive one peso as a reward, which is roughly equivalent to two cents.

Despite derisive comments, the village chief sticks to his idea

However, the campaign also earned ridicule on social media.

However, Cernal is certain that it can be an important measure for the well-being of the population.

The local health authorities have already recorded 44 cases of dengue fever.

In addition to the program, other measures are also being taken to prevent the spread of mosquitoes.

For example, streets are being cleaned to remove accumulations of water where eggs could be laid.
