On Wednesday, the man was hired by a resident in the small town of Wellesley to decorate a meter-high tree with Christmas lights. Shortly afterwards, he was close to death.

The Christmas tree was outside in front of a house in the immediate vicinity of a power pole, as images posted on Facebook by the Wellesley Police Department show.

As he was attaching the lights to the tree with a pole, he came into contact with the power line and received a life-threatening shock. By the time one of his colleagues called 911, the man's heart had already stopped beating.

The first aider received instructions on the phone to carry out initial resuscitation measures, but it was only when emergency doctors arrived that they were able to bring the man back to life using a defibrillator.

As a result of the electric shock, the man was dangerously close to death.
