A tragic accident was only prevented in the small Belgian municipality of Veldegem thanks to the quick action of the bus driver, who was able to evacuate all the children from the broken-down bus in time.
As the Belgian broadcaster VRT reported, the bus suddenly stopped moving due to a technical defect. Just four minutes later, a train crashed into the bus, splitting it in half with a loud bang, as video footage posted on social media shows.
Shortly before the impact, one person can be seen leaving the bus, while a girl was still in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle.
According to the report, one person had to be taken to hospital afterwards due to shock. No one else was injured in the accident. For the train, the collision ended in a derailment.
