Last Monday, the police in the capital of the US state of Indiana received a report that a body had been discovered at Planet Fitness, as reported byIndyStar.

The body was in a tanning bed and was later identified as 39-year-old Derek Sink.

His family had reported him missing last Sunday because he had gone to the gym two days earlier but had not returned.

The gym was open all day and yet no one initially noticed that someone had died in the sunbed. The doors were also open from 5 a.m. (local time) on Monday, but the body was not discovered until around 9 a.m.

The exact cause of death is not yet known, but the police do not believe it was a criminal act.

Why was the body discovered so late?

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our members, and the franchisee is cooperating with local authorities in their investigation," reads a statement from "Planet Fitness".

The company now wants to investigate why it could take several days to find the body despite strict protocols.
