Athens (Greece) - Following the unexpected death of Greek international footballer George Baldock a few days ago, his fiancée Annabel Dignam has now spoken out for the first time - and said goodbye.

"George, the love of my life, my soulmate. The perfect father for our beautiful boy," reads the beginning of the letter, which, according to media reports, was published on social media. A photo was also published showing her with their son Brody.

Particularly tragic: Dignam also revealed that he wanted to fly home this week to celebrate their child's first birthday.

"You completed me. You were my world and we were yours, I know that," the young woman is quoted as saying in the British news platform The Independent.

Baldock was found dead in the swimming pool of his property in the Greek capital Athens late on Wednesday evening. His partner, who lives in England, had tried in vain for hours to reach him by telephone.

The exact cause of death is still unknown, but the local police have ruled out the possibility of any outside involvement.

Baldock's family are also saddened and dismayed: "We are heartbroken by the sudden death of our beloved George. We can confirm that a post-mortem examination has revealed that George tragically drowned while swimming in the pool at his home in Glyfada, Athens," family members said in a statement detailing the circumstances.

"George, you were a very special father, fiancé, son, brother, uncle, friend, teammate and person. Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought so much love to those who were fortunate enough to know you and those who adored you from the stands."

It was only this summer that Baldock moved from English second division club Sheffield United to Greek top club Panathinaikos Athens after seven years.
