Family packs bananas in fridge: When they open it later, they experience the shock of their lives
Kamperland (Netherlands) - German tourists are currently on vacation in the Dutch town of Kamperland (province of Zeeland on the Oosterschelde) and have made a rather creepy discovery in their accommodation!
As the non-profit organization "Stichting Dierenwelzijn Zeeland" reported in a post on Facebook , the family had bought bananas at a local supermarket in Kamperland at the weekend and put them in the fridge of their accommodation.
When they opened the fridge on Monday morning to prepare breakfast, something was sitting there that definitely didn't belong: it was a large banana spider that was squatting between the fruit and crawled out to escape the cold environment.
After a big scare, the Germans reacted with lightning speed and were able to catch the animal. They placed the runaway on a pan and put a lid on it.
They secured the whole thing with adhesive tape so that the spider could not escape.
Family brought banana spider to reptile zoo
The family took the pan and the crawling animal to the "Iguana" reptile zoo a short time later, where zoo employee Dominic de Jonge welcomed the family.
De Jonge was delighted with the very rare find.
"It has had quite a long journey," he explained to the Dutch newspaper AD. Banana spiders normally live in tropical areas and often live in banana trees. They often arrive in Europe by ship - and sometimes even in one supermarket or another
Although the banana spider looks creepy, it is not dangerous, with the exception of the Brazilian wandering spider.
"Such an animal would rather flee than bite. They are more afraid of humans than the other way around." Nevertheless, a bite can be quite painful, says De Jonge.
