Woman feels depressed when her nipples are touched: This is what's behind sad nipple syndrome
Net - Most people actually feel aroused when their nipples are touched. But it makes some people depressed. They suffer from the so-called "sad nipple syndrome". What is behind it?
TikTok user "fairygender" raised an interesting question in his short clip: "This is so weird, but does anyone else feel EXTREME sadness when someone touches your nipples? It can't just be me. Even when I accidentally touch them, I suddenly feel depressed."
The 18-year-old has obviously touched on a sensitive subject, as 599,900 people have already watched the video. Many felt similarly to him and commented on their experiences:
- "It's like a really weird sinking feeling, like impending doom or really bad nostalgia, I hate it"
- "It's almost like disgust with myself or sadness"
- "It's like homesickness and guilt"
A woman called Beth (27), who has known this problem since childhood, told the Metro:
"Homesickness is just that. And melancholy. It's usually just a flare-up of that feeling, so it's not like it affects my life in any way. Except during sex. I don't like nipple touching during sex because it just ruins everything immediately."
What is sad nipple syndrome?
But what exactly is behind "sad nipple syndrome"?
According to Metro, doctors suspect that it could be linked to the dysphoric milk ejection reflex. This is a condition where some women feel negativity, sadness or even self-loathing during and after breastfeeding.
Dr. Deborah Lee of Dr. Fox Pharmacy told Metro: "This could be due to the fact that nipple stimulation leads to a reduction in dopamine levels, a neurotransmitter in the brain that controls mood."
However, it is unknown whether nipple stimulation can have similar effects outside of breastfeeding, Lee said.
"Those who suffer from sad nipple syndrome experience feelings of sadness, anxiety or depression when their nipples are touched or aroused by themselves or another person," says the expert.
"One possibility as to why this happens could be that those with very sensitive nipples find the sudden release of endorphins from having their nipples touched dysphoric."
