What is that?

Susan McCarthy posted two photos and a video of her find in the public Facebook group "Port Stephens in Pictures". The material is giving some Facebook users the creeps. Some people wrote that they would certainly have nightmares after seeing these pictures.

Originally, the woman wanted to find out what exactly she had seen on the beach. But then she discovered the truth herself.

"It was beautiful, but I probably would have had a heart attack if it had been floating in the water next to me (...) it was completely covered in all these creatures," McCarthy wrote in the group.

Notably, in her video, you can see that all sorts of crustaceans, shellfish, etc. live on the object. Some of the small animals are active, moving around in plain sight.

On closer inspection, it also becomes clear what they are "clinging" to.

Numerous small animals cavort on the trunk.

The sea creatures have colonized a long tree trunk that must have fallen into the water. According to Yahoo News Australia, McCarthy has now also confirmed this.

Barnacles and a variety of other sea creatures had colonized it, the Australian said.

She continued: "I mentioned it to the national parks when I reported the dead and exhausted shearwaters on the beach. But they just said it wasn't unusual after the southerly winds and rough seas we've had."

In the meantime, other users have also shared photos of similar finds in the comments under the Facebook post.

This provesonce again that Australia, with its biodiversity, is always good for an animal surprise!
